Microscophony
Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, 2026
Inspired by Ligeti’s concept of micropolyphony and the graphic notation in his work Artikulation, this project fuses microscopic and musical elements. By applying micropolyphony—a technique where multiple voices, densely intertwined like clouds, blend into one to form an indistinguishable mass of sound—to the world of microorganisms, the microorganisms transform into massive textures and masses, revealing hidden harmonies just as individual tones come together to form a sound mass.

Auditory Illusion to Narrative Illusion
셰퍼드 음(Sheperd Tone): 로저 셰퍼드가 발견한 일종의 착청으로, 끝없이 올라가거나 내려가거나 하는 등의 환청을 만들어낸다. 셰퍼드 음을 이루는 음역을 '셰퍼드 음역'이라고 부른다. (wikipedia)
모든 것을 동일하게, 무한히 반복해야 한다는 공포는 인간을 무력하게 한다. 셰퍼드 음을 시간으로 표현한다면 직선이 아닌 원으로 된 시간이다. 전진하지 못한 채 끊임없이 회귀하는 이 원형의 시간은 고통이자 공포로 작용한다. 앞으로 나아가는 것처럼 보이지만 출발점으로 되돌아가 다시 시작될 수밖에 없는 무한반복의 서사인 것이다.
셰퍼드 음이 서사 구조로 바뀌며 음향과 문학의 경계가 무너지고 서사적 착각 기제로서의 메탈렙시스가 미디어아트로 전환될 때 텍스트는 단순한 기호의 집합이 아니라 음향적 구조를 모방하는 서사적 기구가 되며 청각, 시각, 텍스트가 결합된 ‘서사적 환상’이 구현된다. 텍스트는 더 이상 고정된 페이지 안에 머물지 않고 화면과 전시 공간을 매개로 실제 관람자의 물리적 영역을 가로지르며 출연하고 소멸하기를 반복한다.

It is said literature holds timeless values. But can it be applied to this time and era where technology has so advanced to the point of Artificial Intelligence? This piece draws wisdom and lessons from classic literature ironically with the aid of AI technology. The artist asks 30 universal life-related questions a person may have to the chatbot which was trained to give answers from selected books.
Could literature give us the answer to the problems we have?
